They learnt the differences between the two kinds of characters; Pictographs and Ideographs. Pictographs are characters that depict real objects. Ideographs are characters that represent an idea or concept. They also enjoyed reading 'The Pet Dragon', learning about the meaning of the words in the book and grouping the symbols into the two kinds of characters. It was great to see students looking happy and ready to learn after the holidays. This week in Mandarin Chinese, Grade 3 & 4 students learnt how to describe what they can/can't do. They also practised saying the action words in the correct tones. The students had lots of fun when some of them made mistakes by using the wrong tones, for example they said 'shuǐ jiǎo' (dumplings) when they meant to say 'shuì jiiào' (sleeping). You can't imagine how much they laughed when they found out what they actually said!!
The Grade 5 & 6 students learnt about the Chinese Five Elements theory. They enjoyed discussing how the five elements were related. They were also surprised to find out that these elements play an important part in Chinese peoples everyday life, which includes cooking and general health. During the last 2 weeks, Grade 3 & 4 students learnt to sing the 'Chinese New Year' song. They learnt the lyrics in the song and enjoyed practising the words through the Quizlet matching game. Grade 5 & 6 students learnt about the geographic features of China. They learnt about where the major rivers and cities were. Last week, they started learning words on the topic of 'Positive Personality Traits'. They practised reading the words written in Pinyin, such as 'respect' and 'responsibility'. They used Quizlet to help them pronounce the words properly and enjoyed matching the words from English to Chinese. They got very excited about playing Quizlet Live where they had to work in a group and competed with other classmates. Last week, Grade 3 & 4 students learnt about how Chinese New Year is celebrated among the Chinese community. They learnt about the importance of giving and receiving red packets. They were excited about making them and they hoped that there would be a surprise in them on Chinese New Years day.
The Grade 5 & 6 students also celebrated the New Year by making the Year of the Ox papercuts for their class display. They look beautiful on their classroom windows. Unfortunately, the language program has been interrupted this week due to the Covid 5-day-lockdown. Hopefully, it will be back to normal next week. Stay safe. |
