This week we celebrated Harmony Day and Kindness at Templestowe Park Primary. Regardless of our background and culture we can celebrate the wonderful communities that make up our school. In Performing Arts, we took the opportunity to look at the different nationalities amongst our grades and incorporate this into the lessons for the week.
All of the Preps – Grade 2 sang the song called “Everyone Belongs” looking at the themes of what makes us difference and the importance of that diversity. We discussed how it would be boring if we were all the same, with not differences between us. We also took the opportunity to look at the music and dance of other cultures including Indian, African and Irish dancing. The students discussed the different rhythms, instruments, traditional dress and dance styles in these different cultures before trying these dances for themselves. It sparked a real interest among the groups, who have asked to explore more cultures and dances in future weeks.
