This week we celebrated Harmony Day and Kindness at Templestowe Park Primary. Regardless of our background and culture we can celebrate the wonderful communities that make up our school. In Performing Arts, we took the opportunity to look at the different nationalities amongst our grades and incorporate this into the lessons for the week.
All of the Preps – Grade 2 sang the song called “Everyone Belongs” looking at the themes of what makes us difference and the importance of that diversity. We discussed how it would be boring if we were all the same, with not differences between us. We also took the opportunity to look at the music and dance of other cultures including Indian, African and Irish dancing. The students discussed the different rhythms, instruments, traditional dress and dance styles in these different cultures before trying these dances for themselves. It sparked a real interest among the groups, who have asked to explore more cultures and dances in future weeks.

The Preps have continued their early understandings of music ideas over the past fortnight, introduced to the concept of rhythm and beat and investigating the difference between them.
We discussed a beat is a steady sound that doesn’t change – like the ticking of a clock or your heart beating. Rhythm however is the length of the sounds such as listening and following the words. We used a Bumble Bee chant and a picture of some bees and used our finger to follow the beat consistently throughout the piece. Students then extended the activity to clap along to the beat as their confidence increased. Grade 1 and 2 have continued exploring emotions and how we can use our facial expressions to show our feelings and to be able to tell stories without the need for words, using only our bodies.
While participating in a number of games and songs such as to improvise a number of different emotions depending on the scenario or situation we find ourselves in. We have also extended the range of emotions we are acting further and discussed when we might feel these emotions and how we explore and perform them. We have had a fantastic start to the year in Performing Arts, working with the Preps, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students.
Starting new at Templestowe Park, it has been wonderful for me to meet so many smiling faces when the children walk into the classroom! The Preps have kick started their schooling in Performing Arts using the brightly colourful (and loud) Boomwhackers, while the Grade 1 and 2 students have commenced a Drama unit focussing on the five Emotions - Sadness, Joy, Anger, Disgust and Fear - in the movie Inside Out. It's been a busy start to Term 3 in Performing Arts! Grade 3 & 4 students have begun a Music unit focusing on music 'harmony'. While at school, they will use the instruments recorder and glockenspiel to explore music harmony. Grade 5 & 6 have begun rehearsals for The Wizard of Oz. Students brought fantastic attitudes and ideas to their first Performing Arts lesson and whole group rehearsal on Thursday.
Now that we're back online, Specialist lessons will look a little different, but should be fun nonetheless! This week's Performing Arts sessions will be at the following times: Tuesday, 1:30pm - Gr3-6 students. Use code pa to get involved. Tuesday, 2:30pm - Prep-2 students. Use code pa to get involved. Thursday, 1:30pm (catch-up session) - Gr3-6 students. Use code pa to get involved. Thursday, 2:30pm - (catch-up session) - Prep-2 students. Use code pa to get involved. See you online! Welcome back to school! This term, due to the school production, Choir and Percussion Club will be on 'pause'. I look forward to seeing everyone back for Music Clubs in Term 4. Keep up the singing and playing at home!
Keep your eyes and ears out for some lunchtime Performing Arts clubs too. Grade 5 and 6 students are working away in preparation for the upcoming Wizard of Oz auditions. Students are exploring the different characters in the musical and what kinds of acting and singing skills may be needed to bring these characters to life. Auditions will be held in Week 9 of Term 2. See the Production Weebly page for more information about the TPPS school production!
This week in Performing Arts, students have been getting creative at home and at school with water! Conducting an experiment on sound, students have explored which containers and levels of water make higher and lower sounds when struck. Students made predictions and tested their theories. They made entertaining songs with high and low sounds to share with friends and family.
Students in Prep have been exploring dances from around the world. This dance, the Mexican Hat Dance is fun to do in small groups, using a hat as a prop to dance around. Students dance a sequence of movements moving in different directions and moving as a group.
This week at our TPPS Open Evening, our 2-5 Choir was very excited to perform for the first time since before COVID lockdowns. The choir performed an exciting and powerful version of Jessie J's "Price Tag". The Grade 2/3 students in the Percussion Club also performed for the first time, with a tune we couldn't help dancing along to, "Dance Monkey". The Grade 4/5 students in Percussion Club got to reprise their song "Pirates of the Caribbean" for a fantastic finish to the spectacular night. All our wonderful performers at TPPS had a lot of fun performing for their friends, family and school community.
